Bessie Lee Allen Poe was born on June 6, 1950, to the late Callie Gary Allen and Monroe Allen in Stewart, MS. Professing her faith at an early age, she was a long-time member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Stewart, MS. Through the years, she was a member of the choir and rendered her services to several committees within the church. She was a 1968 graduate of Montgomery County Vocational High School in Kilmichael, MS. As people reflect on her life today, it is apparent that Bessie was a “social butterfly” even during her school days.
She was united in holy matrimony to James Poe on July 29, 1968, and to this union two children were born. In 2018, the vows of this beautiful marriage were renewed on their 50th wedding anniversary in the presence of family and friends.
Prior to leaving the workforce in 1998, Bessie was employed as a machine operator for almost 30 years at factories within the Montgomery County area. After retirement, she enjoyed the domestic duties of keeping a home.
Bessie leaves to cherish her memories: a loving husband, James; two daughters, Cheryl Poe and Katrina (Calvin) Johnson; two grandsons, Calvin Dexter Johnson II “CJ” and James Poe Johnson “Deuce.” Eight sisters will also miss her: Mary Louise Loggins, Marilyn Allen, Cynthia Stewart, Rosa L. (Alfred) Harris, Ella C. Hargrove, Johnny Mae Martin, Hattie Pittman, and Joella (John) Woods; one brother, Calvin Hargrove. She was also endeared by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Siblings who preceded Bessie in death include James Allen, Tommie Lee Allen, C.L. Allen, Jimmie Allen, Jerome Allen, William Elceree Allen, Rebecca Allen-Guess, Annie Sue Allen-Givens, Martha Sue Allen-Scott, Dorothy Diane Allen-Cash, Joe Nathan Hargrove, WS Hargrove, Timothy Hargrove, James Hargrove, Mason Hargrove, Jimmy Hargrove, and Mattie Hargrove-Keys.
