Chester Harrington Obituary

 

Chester Ray Harrington was born October 30, 1936 to the late Sylvester Erby and Minnie Lee Wilson Harrington in the state of Mississippi, county of Winston, town of Louisville.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents. Sylvester Erby and Minnie Harrington; wife, Gladys Goodman Harrington; sister, Ora Lee Brown; two brothers, Robert Lee Harrington and Levester Erby.

Chester accepted Christ at an early age and attended church at Pleasant Grove in Louisville, Mississippi but he joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kilmichael, MS where he actively and faithfully served until his health failed.

Chester successfully completed elementary and high school through the Winston County Public School system.  Chester then matriculated at Alcorn State University, Tuskegee Institute, Mississippi State University, where he earned his Bachelors, Masters and Specialist degrees.  He taught school and served as an administrator in Montgomery County, Holmes County and the State of Alabama during his educational career.

Chester was united in holy matrimony to Gladys Goodman Harrington on May 13, 1962 and to this union three children were born including daughter, Sandra and twins, Tyree and Tyrone.

Chester leaves to cherish his memory daughter, Sandra Faye Harrington Glenn of Kilmichael, MS; sons, Tyrone Harrington (Kayle) of Hattiesburg, MS and Tyree Harrington (Darnita) of Ocean Springs, MS; sister, Virgie Porter of Louisville, MS and Shirley Barnes of Eatonville, FL; brother-in-law Henry Goodman of Los Angeles, CA; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Trotter of Grenada, MS and Esterlean Dawson of Jackson, MS; a special aunt, Lillie Ruth Erby of Louisville, MS; 4 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 1 great grandson, a very special “brother”, Wardell Gunn of Kilmichael, MS, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Chester was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the NAACP, Board member of North Mississippi Medical Center, member of the Retired Teachers Association, Farm Bureau and Montgomery-Carroll-Grenada County Chapter of Alcorn State University Alumni Association, as well as numerous professional, community related organizations.
