LETHA ROBERTS-WALKER Obituary

                                                                                   Letha Mae Gunn Roberts Walker                                                                                                                                          July 15, 1922 ~ September 24, 2021

Letha Mae Gunn Roberts Walker Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, entrepreneur, mentor, Sunday School teacher, “Durant Clean Up Lady”, Order of Eastern Star, United Methodist Women, strong Christian warrior and friend are only a few descriptives of WHO this special lady was! How you saw her, was how she was all the time….full of energy, wearing her high heeled shoes, fashionably dressed, earrings, red lipstick and usually a head covering that perfectly coordinated the outfit she wore.

The second child of Lemmie Williams born in Kilmichael, MS and literally carried by her Dad “Dee” Gunn until she was 5 years old, “Pee Pee” as she was called was a very special young lady. After graduating from Lanier High School in Jackson, MS, Letha taught school for two years in Edwards, MS. Seeking new environments and a broader perspective, she found Chicago, IL to become her second home. Letha immediately joined Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church and was actively involved in teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the Methodist Women’s Group. Meeting the love of her life, she married James Henry Roberts in 1943, and to this union one daughter was born. James and Letha enjoyed life to the fullest and made friends that lasted a lifetime. They opened a Barber Shop on 53rd and Calumet Street, which thrived for six years, until James’ demise in April 1953. Letha, a young widow, with 3 year old “Baby Gail” decided to move to Milwaukee, WS. Arriving there, Letha immediately located a new church home where she met many new friends. In 1958 she married Boisy Walker, Sr. and they purchased and operated the “5th Street Grocery Store” for over twenty years. Upon Boisy’s retirement from the American Can Company, they moved to Durant, MS as their new permanent residence.

A life well lived, Letha was always the light wherever she went sharing her love for God and how blessed she was to live a healthy and blessed life. From Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church, to Lake Meadows Apartments, as well as her recent one week stay at University Hospital in Chicago, she has left a valuable impression that will remain forever.

Continuing her legacy, she leaves her daughter Bishop Gail Roberts-House “Baby Gail”, grandson, Christopher “Precious” House (Shanicka “Little Precious”), Granddaughters Raegan Leigh “Sunshine”, and Rhian Elise “Puddin”, all of Hampton, VA; sister, Kathryn Mae D Armstrong-Miller, Olathe, KS, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. A special THANK YOU is extended to her god son Peter Reneau of Austin, TX and cousin Ruth Douglas-Gillespie, Chicago, IL for their tender, attentive, gracious and loving care supporting Letha during her final years in Chicago. You were truly a blessing!
