Mildred Delores Mayfield was born on September 16, 1938 to the union of the late Walter Mayfield and Ruby Petty Mayfield in Carroll County, MS.  She was raised in Carroll County and later relocated to Winona, MS.  Her childhood was greatly influenced by her maternal grandparents, Dan and Carrie Lee Petty whom affectionately called her  “Tuts Petty”.

Mildred accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age and united with the Pleasant Green M.B. Church in McCarley, MS and later united with Winona Baptist Church in Winona, MS.  Mildred was preceded in death by her only son, Leanard Maurice Owens, one grandchild, Callynn V. Weathers, and one brother Erroll D. Smith.

Mildred was a 1956 graduate of J.J. Knox School in Winona, MS.  She later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served several years at Fort Ord, California where she met and married Lawrence Bernard Owens.  She later relocated back to Winona, MS.

Mildred was employed in various capacities but she always possessed a strong desire to help others.  She worked at Smart Shop, Winona Floral, and the City Café.  She later transitioned into the educational realm and worked with Central Mississippi Head Start Program as an assistant teacher. Later, she began her employment with the Winona Public School district where she worked for 28 years. She was known for her stern discipline in study hall for all children including her own.  She was often referred to as “Ms May” or “Mayfield” by those who loved her.  She was also employed with Wal-Mart for over 20 years before retiring after her health began to fail.  She embraced many who came into contact with her.

Mildred walked softly but carried a big stick.  Many youngsters will remember her as a strong disciplinarian.  She instilled strong work ethics and morals in her children and inspired them to do their best and strive high.

Mildred leaves to forever cherish fond memories:  three daughters, Lisa (Johnny) Johnson of Corinth, MS, Latia (Harvey) Butts and Laneda Owens, both of Winona, MS; a “special” son, Michael Crawford of Winona, MS;  five grandchildren, Leah Crawford and Michael “Nicky” Crawford of Winona, MS, Terrell Crawford of Houston, TX, O’Torria (Ricardo) Williams of Huntsville, AL, and Ja’nee Weathers of Alexandria, VA  six great grandchildren, the Crawford clan - Mikhiyah, Mikhalah, Mikhenzi, and Landon Crawford all of Winona, MS and the Williams two – Callynn and Tyler Williams of Huntsville, AL, four sisters, Shirley Lester of Vaiden, MS Gwendolyn Petty of Smyrna, GA, Toni Mayfield of Louisville, KY, and Bobbie Jean Hill of St. Louis, MO, three brothers, Marvin Harbin of Memphis, TN, Melvin Petty of Carrollton, MS, and Charles Christian of Boston, MA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
